What To Look For In An Inspector

Formal Training
Performing an inspection is much more than walking around and viewing a home. It requires training to understand how to look for defects. A trained method of observation gives inspectors the tools to find problems that an untrained eye will overlook. As a result, you are getting a much more comprehensive inspection. Formal training also teaches proper reporting. Quality reporting is clear, organized and accurate. Once the inspection is finished, the report is the client’s reference to specifics about their property.

State Certification or Licensing
Over the years, Home Inspection has slowly developed into an industry just as the property appraisal industry has developed.  One of the differences in these two industries has been regulation. Most states have some level of regulation for the appraisal industry but for Home Inspection it has been slow in coming. 
Today in the State of Virginia, any person can perform home inspections without being certified or licensed by the state. State Licensing or Certification sets a standard that should be relied upon to maintain a level of competency and professionalism in Home and Building Inspection. Without a standard it is difficult to know the quality of the inspection you are receiving. We now have a voluntary certification program in Virginia. To become State Certified in Virginia, there are many requirements in place to insure that inspectors have a certain level of competence in inspection. Unfortunately the state has yet to stop uncertified inspectors from performing inspections. Hopefully in the near future Virginia and other states will Implement more stringent full licensing programs.

Extensive Construction Backgrounds
It is our belief that a background in construction is imperative for inspectors.
Inspectors need hands on experience. Familiarity with materials and how they go together is essential. This knowledge is needed for the inspector to identify defects and recommend proper methods of correction.

Professionalism
Professional Inspectors are dedicated to serving their clients needs first. In doing so, sometimes people can get upset by our findings. Nevertheless, quality inspectors will provide the client with truthful reporting regardless of possible repercussions.
